Moving in

Set up your utilities

Do these in the week before your lease starts so the lights, water and Wi-Fi work on day one.

Electricity

Set up service in your name before move-in day. Bring your lease start date and the unit's meter number from your welcome email.

Water & sewer

Some properties include water in rent; your lease says which. If not, open an account with the city utility at least five days before move-in.

Internet

Check which providers serve your address and book installation early. First-week slots fill quickly.

Quick fixes

Try these before you submit a request.

Most small problems take two minutes to sort out. If these steps don't work, we'll send someone.

Modern kitchen with a sink and appliances
  1. Open the electrical panel (usually a hallway, garage or utility closet).
  2. Find the switch that sits in the middle position or points the opposite way to the others.
  3. Push it fully to OFF, then firmly back to ON.
  4. If it trips again straight away, unplug appliances on that circuit and try once more. If it still trips, submit a request.
  1. Switch the disposal off at the wall.
  2. Find the hex socket on the underside of the unit and turn it back and forth with the Allen key (often taped to the unit).
  3. Press the red reset button on the bottom.
  4. Run cold water and switch it on. Never put your hand inside the disposal.
  1. Remove the tank lid.
  2. Check that the flapper chain isn't caught under the flapper.
  3. If water flows into the overflow tube, lower the float slightly.
  4. If it keeps running, turn off the valve behind the toilet and submit a request.

A single chirp usually means a low battery. Replace the 9V battery and press the test button. Don't remove the alarm. If it's hard-wired and still chirps, submit a request.
